It had been in the air for quite some time but, in fact, after more than a year of field testing, 2024 has brought out the new frontier of BrazzPads. Does it involve new colors, new prints or new – fantastic – gadgets to store bananas (an essential source of potassium for the entire bouldering community)?

No, it's not about something external, but something that is right in the heart of this indispensable tool for outdoor climbing. Want to know more? Here it is, just enough time for a 2 minute story.

BrazzPads were born three years ago, created by a group of rock and boulder enthusiasts with the desire to revolutionize the concept of crashpad, trying to bring it to the center of interest of enthusiasts. Because, we have always thought, that it is really important to choose well something that can save our ankles, our back and prevent even very serious injuries. However, whether due to different economic availability or often approximate information, we must rely on our sensations, experienced directly under the block.

"Yes, this pad seems good to me..." "No, this one is too soft: if I were to fall on it, I would hit the ground!" "Hmm, this one doesn't convince me too much, even if it has a nice surface." So we also started asking ourselves these questions, after many years and many shared experiences under the blocks. So we chose to produce by hand and in Italy, in our laboratory, what would become the first BrazzPads.

We won't make it too long, but we had to solve some of our critical issues, as often happens with new products. We'll summarize the main one in a nice comment that made us smile and think, because it summarized the many doubts of the athletes who had chosen one of the first models of BrazzPad.

"The Brazz pads are the bomb. So much so that in case of war you could use them as a fallout shelter given their heaviness (they feel like they're full of lead) and superior shock absorption." So, here's what we figured out:

  • They weighed too much;
  • The upper absorption was unbalanced compared to that of the lower material
  • The PU did not match the durability of the closed cell material.

From all this feedback we then began to radically redesign the internal composition of our BrazzPads.

Triple Layer BrazzPad

From the research was born what we then called "BrazzSandwich" triple layer! But why 3 layers? And why in this arrangement?

Let's try to share together the reasoning we faced. A crashpad must not only absorb falls, but must also satisfy some requirements of protection of the athlete in relation to use and environment in which the pad is used. For this reason, we started looking for three materials that could work well together and provide, even individually, a specific contribution to the performance of the BrazzPad.

We can say that:

  • The first layer, with closed cells, has the task of providing stable support for ankles, knees and back during falls and trampling. In order to better protect the first impact and the positioning of athletes.
  • The second central layer, in high density and durable PU, was chosen to dissipate the fall energy as best as possible, working "as a team" with the other two materials.
  • The third layer helps protect the body from contact with foreign bodies and terrain with dangerous materials, such as stones, holes or branches.

We can say that this update of the BrazzPad satisfies us particularly and makes us proud because, in addition to having a more reliable and durable product, we have also managed to discover lighter materials, capable of lightening the pads by even more than 3 kilos!

This BrazzSandwich is therefore a beautiful collaborative experiment between everyone, athletes, friends and the artisan laboratory, which has given an improved version of the product to the entire Boulder community!
